Commitment, reponsibility, clear and frequent communications. All the buzz words flew from JH's mouth in the last MEC meeting. Now not to disparage him but, WHERE'S THE BEEF? We are not even talking to management about money yet and it's nearly two years into it.
COME ON.
As to the union hater/management lover/with us or against us/no middle ground diatribe found in his statement I can only say this: This is precisely the sort of fascism I have come to expect when I question the progress of the negotiations.
To wit:
I disagree with the union's position. Therefore I am a union hater. WRONG
I disagree with the union's methods. Therefore I am a management lover. WRONG
I see some validity in management's position. Therefore I am cuddling up to them for personal gain. WRONG.
This simplistic casting of viewpoints is so childish and petulant that it almost does not deserve mention.
But as a wise man once said: All that is required for evil to triumph is for good men to do nothing.

Open bet for Jay Heppner
Hey Jay,
Here's an easy way for you to make money. Honest. I'll bet you a thousand bucks ($1000 US) that you won't have a contract negotiated, recommended by you, and ratified by the time your tenure is up. Howzat?
It seems you didn't get the memo, so I'll enlighten you at the risk of appearing like a 3w light bulb in a one mile deep coal mine.
Management said the cost saving of the synergy was targeted at approximately $5m a day. That's $1.78B per year. Now they are on target for a $1.4B profit eeked out of a previous year's loss. So they have, without materially changing the flying, already gained more from the merger synergy than they had planned.
Ergo, THEY DON'T NEED YOUR COMPLIANCE OR APPROVAL. YOU ARE AN INTERESTED OBSERVER. And nothing more. They can run this thing, as is, ad infinitum. And you can bang your chest all you want and they will laugh all the way to the bank. Turning up the heat is plain stupid when you don't have the ammunition to fight the war.
You want to turn this into a USAir cesspit? Just keep it up. Keep up the rhetoric and the obstructionism. But when after your term we are still looking at this sorry assed contract of ours, that will amount to the best part of 88% of our annual salary YOU will have given away. The Delta plus one offer was a 22% pay raise for us (that's without any forward movement we could expect from the deal). It will have been 4 years that ALPA will have tossed that aside. That's 88%. gone forever. For those of to whom this represents a sole source of income that is a huge loss, and one that you are responsible for.
So the offer's on the table for a week from this posting.
Looking forward to hearing from you but I won't hold my breath.

An open letter to Captain Heppner
On reading your introductory letter and its reference to the lack of progress in the negotiations which you have been part of, I can only conclude that we may expect more of the same. That is, nothing. No progress. Same expensive yet meagre contract, only now we have the added threat of losing domiciles. Thanks for nothing.
So if this is the case, why don't you do the right thing, seek release from mediation and plan for an immediate strike.
If not, why not?
One more thing Cap'n H: As far as us "negotiating individual deals"..............what are you talking about? Do you mean the non-voted side letters that ALPA cooked up which caused even further financial distress to some of us? Do you mean the ridiculous methodolgy used in paying out retirement compensation...that which benefitted senior, young pilots? Or do you mean abiding by the contractual option of accepting junior manning assignments? Now that the IRC has been put to rest and we live under an injunction from the court, is this your new secretspeak? Please enlighten us.
